The Solar da Baronesa was built in 1863, around the same time that Pelotas lived the apogee of charqueadas. Based on slave labor, the charque industry developed on the banks of the Arroio Pelotas and the São Gonçalo Canal, making the city important for the economy of Rio Grande do Sul. The families of the charque lords enjoyed the wealth that the industry provided, living in luxurious mansions and investing in the modernization of the city.
The sons of the "charqueadores" (people that produce a specific type of salted meat), influenced by the European culture, studied and spread the science, the arts, and the letters. It was at this time that Pelotas also reached the cultural apogee, represented by the urbanization and architecture of the city, events and artisanal sweets. Annibal and Amelia Hartley Antunes Maciel, Barons of the Three Serros, settled in the Chácara da Baronesa after their marriage in 1864, being the first of the three generations to inhabit the house.
