The palace of the Counts of Castro Guimaraes was built in 1904 by Jorge o Neill. He built the adjoining Casa da Santa Maria, next to the Farol Santa Marta, for his daughter. O Neill sold the house in 1910 to the Conde de Castro Guimaraes- after whom the house is now named. Guimaraes bequeathed the house- and its wonderful library- to the Cascais Council when he died. The library includes the codex of Dom Afonso Henriques- dated 1505 and including a drawing of Lisbon as it looked before the 1755 earthquake.
The house has a organ -and concerts are occasionally given on it. Very occasionally there has also been opera in the adjoining gardens. The gardens are casually referred to as the Peacock Park- as there are so many peacocks there. There are also ornamental chickens- with chicks- everywhere and turtles. It is a lovely garden-with a wonderful old fountain with old azulejo tiles.
