Capitania do Porto

The Seixas Palace, which was built in 1916, is the site of the Cascais Maritime Authority and the Maritime Mess. It has a beautiful stone caravela built into the stonework on the north side. It was built on the site of the 17th century fort of Santa Catarina, which itself was constructed from 1531 onwards, on the orders of King John III of Portugal. The Mula river (which runs underneath the main street of Cascais and can be seen in photographs from the 1900´s, before that was built on top of it) enters the sea on the north side of the palace, underneath where the fisherman unload their catch. You can see the river, and lots of starfish on the pillars, if you canoe under or swim up to the fisherman´s pontoon. Be careful if you do so because there are often many children diving off the pontoon in summer (even though they are not allowed to).
