Parish church of Beeston – Nottingham

@rebeccahock_art

Another beautiful old building in Nottingham is the Anglican Parish Church of Beeston. It may not be as advertised as the more famous attractions of the area, such as Wollaton Hall or Nottingham Castle, but it is like a hidden gem, sitting in the middle of the suburb of Beeston and providing a place of rest from the business of every day. On a normal day at lunchtime, the benches around the grass are filled with people coming together to eat. The green door of the church is often open and the inside is even lovelier than the outside. Community events and also art exhibitions have all found a home here. For that reason, as also for the fact that this place is an attractive icon of the town, I decided to paint this watercolour of it during a sunny afternoon.

I love the effect of the Sennelier Royal Blue (322) mixed with a bit of Ultramarine Deep (315) for the sky glowing in the late afternoon, and made the greens using various mixtures of Lemon Yellow (501) with Forest green (899), Royal Blue and Payne's Grey (703). This grey is one of my favourite colours for making shadows, as in the darkest parts of this picture. Finally the warm, sunbathed sandstone of the church was painted with diluted Yellow Ochre (252).
